In Europe, Shaw's/Star Market's parent company,
J.Sainsbury's, has already removed all genetically
engineered ingredients from its store brand products. It
is surprising to learn that the company refuses to provide
the same safeguards to its U.S. customers. This is an
unacceptable double standard that puts Americans at
risk while protecting European consumers.
Shaw's/Star Markets is the second largest grocery chain
in New England. In March of 2002, the genetic testing of Shaw's products,
including pancake mix, corn chips, taco dinners, and
cereals, found genetically engineered
ingredients in all four of these products.

Shaw's claims to control its
store brand products from "field to shelf". If that is the
case, Shaw's/Star Markets has the power to stop using
genetically engineered foods.
Other national supermarket chains in the U.S., like Whole Foods, Wild
Oats and Trader Joe's, have agreed to remove GE
ingredients from their store brands. If these
national supermarkets can do it, so can Shaw's.
