The UnSafeway

Safeway operates about 1475 supermarkets across the United States and about 210 stores in Canada. It is a national grocery chain selling fresh produce, bakery items, major brand food items and a wide selection of its own store brand products.

Despite numerous requests to meet with them, Safeway executives have refused to meet with groups concerned with the issue of its continued use of genetically engineered food.

Safeway highlights its environmental record and customer response, but has failed to address the risks of GE food to the environment and its customers.

Here's what you can do:

Safeway also owns Genuardi's Family Markets, Carrs, Pavillion's, Randall's Food Markets and Von's. Safeway recently sold their midwest chain Dominick's.

Safeway's store brand products account for about 25% of their profits, and their brands include: Safeway, Safeway Select, Verdi, Lucerne, Mrs. Wright's. In the fall of 2000, Safeway was forced to take several corn products off the shelves, including its store brand products, due to StarLink corn contamination.

GE-Free Markets Coalition and True Food Network members have been pressuring Safeway all over the country demanding our right to safe, healthy, non-GE foods.
