At the end of April, 2001 Texas consumers concerned about GMO contamination
and
the consumer's right-to-choose, launched a letter writing campaign to HEB, a Texas grocery chain.
HEB is a
$7.5 billion
family-owned Texas business with more than 275 stores and 50,000 employees.
As
HEB has a reputation for listening to customer feedback, we were hopeful
that HEB
would respond positively to our concerns.
Within a few weeks on June 13, three HEB representatives,
including the Vice President of Quality Assurance and Environmental Affairs,
the Director of Customer Relations and the Central Texas Regional Public
Affairs Manager, met for over two hours with a Say No To
GMOs! coalition of seven concerned Central
Texas consumers and organizations.
Two years later in April, 2003, there was a second meeting with four HEB
representatives again for over two hours.
HEB agreed to continue the dialogue in three months but six months later
there is only silence.
HEB has not lived up to their promise and continues to ignore this issue.
Although many, many
letters have been sent, more concerned Texas consumers are needed to turn up
the heat on HEB.
Please join the effort to make consumer choice a reality in Texas!
Call HEB and tell them you want them to stop using GE ingredients in thier store brands!
