Safeway Action Report - Portland,
Oregon
Following on the heels of the 1,000 person No WTO march on Saturday, September 13th,
NW RAGE hosted a protest at the Hawthorn St. Safeway in Portland,
Oregon. Concerned activists in biohazard suits educated the shoppers with flyers and
petitions as concerned local activists went inside the store to speak with the manager.
"Safeway has been a big proponent of GM foods since they came on the market.",
said a local
rage supporter, "And though over 80% of shoppers are concerned about eating food
that contains genetically modified organisms (GMOs), Safeway had disregarded
these concerns, scoffing at the notion that customers might not want to eat
these untested, unlabeled and unwanted 'frankenstein foods'."
NW Rage (Resistance Against Genetic Engineering) is a member of the GE-Free Markets
Coalition.
They hold monthly actions on the Safeway Campaign. Past actions included a
"Franken' Wedding" -
a wedding ceremony to marry Steven Burd, the CEO of Safeway, and Betty the Biotech Corn.
This mock wedding highlighted the relationships between the FDA, Monsanto, and the grocery
giants in their promotion of GE food.
