The GE-Free Markets Coalition is a loose network of grassroots and
professional NGO's working to eliminate the use of GE food in the
supermarket sector. Our goal, as a coalition, is to provide and share
resources to enable groups to organize on the local level as part of a larger national campaign by coordinating tactics, targets, timelines and media.
The mission of the GE-Free Markets Coalition is to create a national
Ground swell of activism pressuring targeted supermarkets to remove GE
ingredients from their store-brands and ultimately their entire store.
Since 2000, the GE-Free Markets Coalition focused our efforts on Trader Joe's, a national supermarket chain, to rid their store brands of GE ingredients. In November 2001, on our second National Day of Action, Trader
Joe's announced they would begin to source only non-GE ingredients due to public pressure and concerns. Now the coalition is broadening its efforts to include a national target as well as several regional chains to launch a National Supermarket Campaign.
In March of 2002, the coalition launched the National Supermarket Campaign, encompassing supermarket chains across the US. These supermarkets include Safeway ,
Shaw's and Star Market , Food Lion, Food Emporium and Publix. Since the launch, thousands of letters, post cards and faxes have been made to these supermarket
CEO's and store managers from concerned customers.
